The Business Consultants policy explained...
What's special about this policy?
Our policy for consultants works for you in four ways:
- You are covered for claims made against you in the course of your work for clients.
- Your defence costs, your liability to third parties and claimant's costs will be covered.
- The costs of putting a mistake right will be met if this will avoid a claim being made against you.
- In certain circumstances your fees will be covered if a client refuses to pay because of your negligent act and threatens to counter-claim if you pursue what's owed to you.
Your business is protected:
- against claims for negligence and breach of duty or care
- from negligent misstatement or negligent misrepresentation
- against claims for defamation
- against inadvertent infringements of someone else's copyright
- against dishonesty of partners, directors, employees or self-employed freelancers

Why do you need Professional Indemnity Insurance?
Businesses come to you for advice because you're an expert in your field; a seasoned professional.
Unfortunately, when things go wrong, those same businesses come to you to seek recourse.
Now, more than ever, professionals need protection from possible litigation. Allegations of negligence, true or not, can leave your reputation and your finances in tatters.
That's where professional indemnity insurance comes in.
A good PI policy will pay your legal costs and any compensation for which you're found liable in relation to the mistakes you've made.
Suppose a client claims that your work is negligent and refuses to pay you. Insurers will pay your outstanding fee if it prevents your client from making a larger claim against you.
Claims example
A consultant acted as an interim finance director for a client.
During the period of temporary employment, the client's suffered a downturn in its fortune: profits plummeted and staff were made redundant.
Unsurprisingly, fingers were pointed at the strategic decisions made by the consultant.
When the client sued the consultant for professional negligence, insurers stepped in to defend the allegations. Legal costs were covered and the consultant sustained minimal damage to his reputation.
