How PI insurance works

There are five key ways in which our professional indemnity policies will protect you:

1. Protect your financial interests.

A professional indemnity insurance policy will pay the legal costs of defending a claim against you and pay compensation on your behalf, if you're legally liable to pay compensation.

2. Minimise disruption to your business.

If a claim is made against you, you will benefit from having an experienced claims handling team on your side, with access to a panel of specialist litigation lawyers.
You'll have to provide the information required to defend the claim against you, but you can get on with your business knowing that the legal costs and compensation will be covered.

3. Pay your fees if a dissatisfied client refuses to pay

Sometimes, a dissatisfied client will not sue you but simply refuse to pay, making it clear that if you try to pursue the money you're owed, they'll counterclaim against you for a greater amount.
With a normal professional indemnity policy you'll be left high and dry in this situation; our policies, however, will pay the amount you are owed including what you might owe to sub-contractors or free-lancers.

4. Cover the costs of rectifying a mistake.

You don't have to wait for a claim to be made against you before you can make a claim on your policy. For instance, you might need to put something right before the client is aware of the problem. Hiscox will pay the cost of doing so, as long as it's not more than the amount that the client might otherwise have claimed.

5. Protect you, even if the claim against you isn’t valid

It's not unknown for companies to make claims against professionals alleging negligence in order to avoid, or delay, paying what they owe. If someone makes an allegation against you, they will win if you don't defend yourself.
Even if you've done nothing wrong, but a client alleges negligence on your part, the policy will protect you.

Importantly, our policies will also protect you against claims made against you resulting from:
