The Hiscox Charity and Trustee Insurance policy from Blyth Valley, is designed not only to protect charities but charity trustees too.
As a trustee, you volunteer your time to make life a little better for others, but in doing so, you expose yourself to risk and liabilities you may not even be aware of.
You're potentially liable for the outcome of all decisions and actions carried out in the name of the charity - and charities are subject to the same onerous regulations and bureaucracy as any other sector in society today.
Even if you're not liable, the high cost of defending yourself against a claim can be devastating, both financially and emotionally.
Which is why, as a charity trustee, it makes sense to protect yourself so you can help others knowing that, should things go wrong, we can help you.
In the event of a claim, the policy will cover the cost of legal advice and representation as well as any compensation that the charity, you, or any other trustee could be liable for.
This policy has been created specifically to protect the risks and potential liabilities of UK charities and their trustees.
It incorporates a separate limit specifically for claims brought against individuals, ensuring that your and the other trustees' personal assets are not at risk from a claim against the charity.

Top of this pageYour charity's annual auction is well supported and you succeed in raising over two thousand pounds for equipment for the children's hospice.
Three days later, you're going through the evening's receipts with the charity's treasurer. You find that you're four hundred pounds short.
The treasurer thinks she knows who may be responsible for the missing funds and takes the matter into her own hands. She calls at the home of one of the volunteers and effectively accuses him of taking the money.
The accused volunteer is understandably appalled to have his integrity questioned in such a public and humiliating way.
Three days later you receive a letter from his solicitor stating that the aggrieved volunteer feels he has no option but to pursue the charity for a formal public apology and compensation.
Whether or not the volunteer was guilty (he wasn't in this example, three cheques became mislaid in an administrative error), the charity must defend itself legally and pay any compensation due.
However, if there is no appropriate policy in place, the charity's trustees could be found personally liable for breach of duty of care and could be called upon to pay for these costs with their own money.
